Are you using the popular Cisco 1000BASE-T SFP-GLC-T? In fact, the GLC-T has been announced end of sale and end of life. The best replacement is the GLC-TE.

GLC-T is a fiber optic transceiver module via Category 5 copper lines, Cisco GLC-T fiber transceivers provide 1Gbps data transfer and it provides full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to high-end workstations and between wiring closets over existing copper network infrastructure. GLC-T SFP is compliant to IEEE 802.3 and its dimension is 0.6 in x 2.8 in x 0.6 in. GLC-T is with plug in module type Mini-GBIC.

SFP-GE-T is Cisco fiber optic transceiver that works with 1000BASE-T. SFP-GE-T is with extended working temperature and it is with DOM support. SFP-GE-T is small form transceiver with RJ45 connector interface and it is with spring latch for high density applications.

Difference between GLC-T and SFP-GE-T

GLC-T, Cisco compatible copper SFP transceiver module for Category 5 copper wire, RJ-45 connector.

SFP-GE-T, 1000BASE-T SFP transceiver module for Category 5 copper wire, extended operating temperature range, RJ-45 connector

Cisco SFP-GE-T

000BASE-T SFP Copper RJ-45 100m Transceiver

The difference between GLC-T and GLC-TE is the operating temperature range.

Operating temperature range for GLC-T and GLC-TE is respectively commercial temperature range (COM) and Extended temperature range (EXT).

The difference between SFP-GE-T and GLC-TE is that the SFP-GE-T has the function of NEBS 3 ESD.

Distinguishing Between Cisco SFP-GE-T and GLC-T SFP Formats

On the face of it, the two formats are pretty similar and, most of the time, are interchangeable. Both are:

  • 1000BaseT
  • RJ45-Based
  • Good for up to 100m Ethernet cables
  • Gigabit-speed with 10/100 compatibility
  • Useful in the same temperature ranges (0-70C)

So in other words, they're both fairly basic Gigabit Ethernet SFP Ports, and both should work fine with any standard GbE cabling.

For 99% of Cisco network operators, either could be used with no problems.

NEBS  level 3

NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) describes the environment of a typical United States RBOC Central Office. NEBS is the most common set of safety, spatial and environmental design guidelines applied to telecommunications equipment in the United States. It is an industry requirement, but not a legal requirement.

NEBS Level 3 regulates a lot of stresses including:

1. Fire resistance

2. Thermal margins

3. Acoustic limits

4. Proper airflow

5. Vibration resistance (like earthquakes)

6. RF tolerances and emissions

7. Failover capabilities

GLC-T vs. SFP-GE-T

Most users have questions about choosing and using the SFP modules for network switches, routers and firewalls. For example, which SFP transceivers will support my ASR 1001 router? Does my C1-WS3850-12S/K9 support the GLC-TE module? If the GLC-TE 1GE SFPs run well with 1000Mbit in a SFP+ port on the 4500-X?

Now in this article we will take the Cisco ASR 1000 Series Routers for the exact example. Find out all the SFP Transceivers for ASR 1000 Series Router.

Firstly, let’s read some users’ problems while choosing SFP modules.

Some users’ questions about SFP modules for ASR 1000 Series:

“We’ve recently bought a Cisco asr 1001 Router and I have a number of interface slots. I want to populate these with fibre modules. Can you tell me which fibre modules are compatible please? Are the regular SFPs ok to use or is there a special asr series of SFPs to use?”

“Recently am facing some issues with ASR 1002 and GLC-TE Copper Base-T Module.

Please see below details:

1. Router Model ASR 1002 and Running IOS asr1000rp1-adventerprisek9.03.04.02.S.151-3.S2.bin

2. Running Copper Base-T Module SFP-GE-T

Now I am trying to use GLC-TE module but port is not UP.

How can I solve this problem!!?”

For the ASR, you need "SFP-GE-T". Cisco has updated its platforms and minimum software releases that support the Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) and Gigabit Ethernet Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver modules. We can read the full list of Transceiver Models and Minimum Software Release Required supported on Cisco ISR 1000 Series.

Cisco Catalyst 9000 Switching Family

$

The Cisco Catalyst 9000 family of campus LAN switches is designed for an entirely new era of networking. The network can now learn, adapt, and evolve. Designed to be intuitive, the network can recognize intent, mitigate threats through segmentation and encryption, and learn and change over time. The new network helps your organization unlock opportunities, enhance security, be more agile, and operate more efficiently.

The Cisco Catalyst heritage-Catalyst 9000 family

The Cisco Catalyst 9000 family of switches is the next generation of our best-selling Cisco Catalyst line of enterprise LAN switches and operates with the same feature-rich Cisco IOS XE 16 and field-reprogrammable UADP ASIC technology already widely deployed with the Cisco Catalyst 3850 and 3650 Series. The 9000 family also takes advantage of a shared DevOps toolkit for open programmability, analytics, and telemetry. This means you can expect to have all of the advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 capabilities that you have come to expect and more, at twice the capacity.

One key difference, however, is the new subscription licensing model that helps make ordering easy.

Rather than the multiple, perhaps confusing, licensing options, Cisco Catalyst 9000 switches are offered with three options–Cisco DNA Essentials, Cisco DNA Advantage, and Cisco ONE Advantage. Each of these are offered in 3-, 5-, and 7-year options.

The new Essentials licensing provides all the same great features you get from your current high-performing Cisco Catalyst switches and more. Full NetFlow, basic programmability, automation, and monitoring plus an onboard x86 CPU complex are included.

And a Cisco Catalyst 9000 switch with a Cisco DNA Essentials package has been priced to be less expensive than current comparable

Cisco Catalyst switches.

But the Cisco Catalyst 9000 family was designed from the ground up to do way more than just turbo-charge your network. These switches have been packed with a host of new features provided in the Cisco DNA Advantage package that provide greater security, automation, and insight than was previously possible. This includes DNA Center, SD-Access, and advanced security and analytics capabilities such as Encrypted Traffic Analytics.

But for you, the one who actually runs the network, it is not so much about what the new Cisco Catalyst 9000 switches can do but what they can do for you.

We have designed the Cisco Catalyst 9000 family of switches to meet five specific challenges facing your network, with breakthrough innovations in security, operational simplicity, mobility, IoT, and cloud.

But don’t just listen to us, and listen to customers like you who have been part of our early field trials.

“The Catalyst 9000 has exceeded NASA’s mission critical requirements for security and segmentation…and at twice the performance.”

— Eric Latta, solutions architect, NASA

“IT can easily orchestrate global policy to secure, differentiated access for staff and students across multiple campuses with SD-Access’ network segmentation. The new network from Cisco makes our IT faster, more flexible, and more intuitive.”

— Ulrich Hauptmann, head of IT, Jade University of Applied Sciences (Germany)

“Catalyst 9000 creates immediate IT efficiency results with a straightforward and simple provisioning view across secure segments.”

— Kevin Tompkins, network architect, Scentsy (United States)

“As a leader in state-of-the art healthcare services, we depend on our ‘always on’ network. The resiliency, scale, and management simplicity of the Catalyst 9000 will allow our network to securely grow as quickly as our needs grow.”

— Thomas Noppe, lead IT architect, UZ Leuven (Belgium)

Cisco Wireless Solutions

$

Today we believe that every company relies on wireless technology to operate its business. So to meet customers’ diverse needs, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses, Cisco can provide a broad portfolio of wireless solutions.

How to help wireless customers select the right wireless solutions? In the following part there are three approaches for a range of customers.

Three Approaches for a Range of Customers

It is easier when you offer appliance-free, appliance-based, and cloud-based solutions.

On Premises and Appliance-Free

With these solutions, the access points handle the wireless management. So no additional hardware is necessary. They are easy to use, affordable, and work well in environments with up to 25 access points.

Off Premise and Cloud Based

These Cisco® Meraki® cloud-managed solutions are ideal for deployments with access points in multiple remote locations. They are highly scalable, are license based, and require little or no IT staff on site.

On Premises and Appliance-Based

When a company needs 25 to 250 access points in one location, these are the solutions to sell. Network administrators manage the numerous access points with a centralized, wireless LAN controller.

Three Common Network Models

Most customers have small wireless networks, distributed branch locations, or large campuses.

Small Business Local Networks

These customers generally have one location with 25 access points or fewer. They need wireless solutions that are easy to install, easier to manage, and completely reliable. And they want competitive features and performance for an affordable price.

Branch Office Networks

This category of customers requires 25 or more access points in distributed locations. They want wireless solutions that can be licensed, secured, and managed by remote staff, and that will scale up or down quickly to meet changing demand.

Central Campus Networks

This enterprise customer group uses up to 250 access points in a centralized complex. They need broader services, premium performance, bulletproof security, greater network traffic visibility, and simple, centralized control of the many access points.

A: Smart Net Total Care® pricing for the Cisco Catalyst 9000 family is at parity with the existing Cisco Catalyst 3850, 4500, and 4500X Series.

Q: Does Smart Net Total Care support include support for all the different licenses?

A: Smart Net Total Care supports hardware and network essentials and network advantage perpetual licenses. All term-based subscription licenses, such as Cisco DNA™ Essentials and Cisco DNA Advantage, are covered by SWSS, which is included by default in the price of the license.

Q: Do Cisco Catalyst 9000 family switches support the Enhanced Limited Lifetime Warranty (E-LLW)?

Yes, all Cisco Catalyst 9000 family switches support E-LLW. E-LLW provides 90-day 8x5 Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) hardware support, next-business-day hardware replacement, and guest access to the knowledge base. The business unit software policy provides free software updates for Cisco IOS software in the network stack.

Q: What is the software support model with E-LLW on the Cisco Catalyst 9000 family?

A: The Enhanced Limited Lifetime Warranty is limited to hardware support. For the Cisco Catalyst 9000 family, software-related issues are covered by SWSS, which is included as part of the Cisco DNA subscription license. Also, for the first 90 days, you are entitled to configuration help for Cisco IOS XE software-related questions. Software updates to the Cisco IOS XE software will be supported by the business unit software policy.

Four Reasons to Consider the All-in-one ISR 1000

$

For SMBs, Cisco’s 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000) provide an affordable solution for switching, routing, and wireless all in one device.

And today’s operations are more complex—going way beyond the basics.

SMBs have little-to-no-IT resources, time, energy or skills to handle this new normal of business practices. For those who are interested in how it works, watch this 2-minute video:

Cisco 1000 Series ISR for SMBs

http://blog.router-switch.com/2018/08/four-reasons-to-consider-the-all-in-one-isr-1000/?socialshare=vjs_video_3

SMBs, like all businesses, need secure, simple and affordable IT options that will protect their critical business intellectual property, block or guard against risky practices, set policies and offer backup connectivity—all while having the ability to connect every device within any point in the network.

Having the right device to run day-to-day operations can transform your SMB.

Let’s imagine you are a small business that deals with the public in retail, finance, education or other commercial firms. You want your customers to be able to use the Wi-Fi guest access without any threat of them viewing financial, identity, health or other private records. “The last thing a clinic wants is for the network to be hacked and for patients’ records to be exposed. You want to provide guest access which is independent of the clinic’s network. In technical terms, it’s called network segmentation, which is simple to do with an ISR 1000.” says Shankar Ramachandran, Product Line Manager for Cisco Integrated Services Routers.”

Cisco’s versatile 1000 Series Integrated Services Router is like a small office or branch office-in-a-box for your business, school, clinic or retail location. Here are the top four reasons why:

  1. All-in-one solutionRouting, wireless and switching are combined in a single device with Cisco’s trusted IOS® XE software. Internet access, comprehensive security, and management are combined in a single, high-performance device. Plus, with pay-as-you-grow performance licensing you can avoid unnecessary hardware upgrades and save on CapEx.
  2. Advanced wired and wireless accessAll of your devices connected to the network with advanced connectivity options like 4G LTE, DSL, copper and fiber Ethernet. Plus, ISR 1000s have a built-in wireless access point that includes integrated wireless controller capability, so you have the fastest way to wirelessly connect an entire network or office site, quickly, easily and affordably. With Cisco’s Mobility Express you can support up to 100 Cisco APs and 2,000 connected client devices on a single Wi-Fi network.
  3. Enterprise-class security—With integrated security features like IP Security, high-performance VPN’s and Encrypted Traffic Analytics, the ISR 1000 is always on, always open to protect your desktops, tablets and mobile devices and content from malware and ransomware. In addition, Cisco Umbrella™ is a cloud security platform that provides the first line of defense against threats on the Internet wherever users go, blocking malicious attacks and DDOS attacks before a connection is ever established. It will even help identify where the next attack will emerge.
  4. Cisco Software-Defined WAN Evolution—With Cisco SD-WAN you can define policies and prioritize traffic all from one management console. Zero-touch deployment across the WAN means you can deploy, manage, operate and secure your network quickly and easily, so you can get back to your business.

Interface Ports on Cisco Catalyst Switches for Uplink and Downlink Connections

Cisco Catalyst Switches support the following interface ports for uplink and downlink connections:

  • Fast Ethernet port (FE)
  • Gigabit Ethernet port (GE)
  • Multigigabit Ethernet port (mGig)
  • SFP module slot (SFP)
  • Dual-Purpose port (GE/SFP)
  • 10GBASE-T port (10GB-T)
  • X2 module slot (X2)
  • SFP+ module slots (SFP/SFP+)
  • CFP module slot (CFP)
  • QSFP module slot (QSFP)

The bracketed notations are abbreviations used in the specification comparison tables in this catalog.

  • A dual-purpose port is an interface combining a Gigabit Ethernet port with an SFP module slot and is notated as GE/SFP (Either one can be activated independently).
  • Similarly, SFP+ module slots are notated as SFP/SFP+ due to their compatibility with SFP.
  • SFP/SFP+ modules can be mounted to X2, CFP, or QSFP module slots using an appropriate converter.

In most cases, the supported port interfaces and number of ports of each product can be determined from their SKU (Refer to page 14 for details).
